Painting of the Beatles in the 60s
The British Invasion: Goo Goo Goo Joob

The theme for the 2014 San Diego County Fair was The Fab Fair – Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the British Invasion. Artists were invited to compete in a Fine Art Competition and this was a theme that I found too fun to pass up.

I was a kid when the Beatles invaded America, but I can remember watching them perform on the Ed Sullivan show and being thrilled by them. Every kid my age wanted to have a Beatles haircut, which was strictly frowned upon by the establishment. Girls wanted mini-skirts and to wear their hair short like Twiggy, a top English model. Pop culture, music, and fashion were never the same. The Rolling Stones, Herman’s Hermits, The Dave Clark Five, Peter and Gordon…it went on and on.

I tried to capture all of these memories in this nostalgic piece. I also wanted to capture and caricature the art styles of the period, heavily influenced by Peter Max. But mostly I wanted to have fun. And I think the joy I felt is all there on the canvas.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it.
