Continuing with my theme of mixed media on canvas, I wanted to capture the spirit of the 1950s in one painting. If a picture is worth a thousand words, could I squeeze that many words into one picture? I tried.
A pop culture piece from the 1950s has to have Elvis! So he’s my centerpiece. And Marilyn Monroe was a huge star! But so was Howdy Doody.
I was just a tot during the 50s, but there are a few memories: such as juke box machines at every café diner table. The car was everything, we went to the drive-in movie in it and watched the refreshments do an entertaining dance; we had dinner at the drive-in restaurants where car hops brought root beer float. Ah, those were fun times.
So I hope this nostalgic piece evokes the spirit of the 1950s for you, too. Even if you weren’t born yet, the painting enables you to live it in the here and now. That’s the great thing about art, it freezes moments in time and shares them for eternity.
But, the truth is, this painting is best enjoyed while sipping a root beer float!
